My Fan Expo Boston Experience

On Sunday, August 12, I attended a very well organized, fun convention: Fan Expo Boston. It was held from August 10-12 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. This was the first year that the event was advertised solely under the Fan Expo line, after a gradual transition from being known as Boston Comic Con. Notable guests included Evangeline Lilly, Jeff Goldblum and Jason Momoa. The lineup also consisted of a heavy presence of Back to the Future cast members such as Christopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson. As with any convention, there was a very large amount of cosplay. Common characters were Rey, Spider-Man, and Ant-Man.

I also spent a large amount of time in the artist alley talking to and taking pictures of artists whom I’ve browsed the work of prior to the convention.

Another notable part of Fan Expo Boston was the exclusive merchandise. Pictured in the Instagram post below, the Newbury Comics booth had exclusive pint glasses that they saved a certain number of for each day of the convention. Additionally, the show store had some interesting merchandise as well. There was a Bob Ross Funko Pop figure, which was all white, giving fans the ability to paint it. I actually received the event when I earned enough points on the Fan Expo Boston app and redeemed a free bag. Fans who downloaded the Fan Expo Boston app were receiving notifications on their devices all weekend long with hints regarding promo codes that could be typed into the app in order to receive points. These points could be spent on anything from merchandise, all the way to a meet and greet with a celebrity of the fan’s choice.

The highlight of my Sunday at Fan Expo Boston was meeting Evangeline Lilly. I got her autograph and a photo op with her. She was there with her illustrator, Rodrigo Bastos Didler, promoting the next installment in their book series, The Squickerwonkers. Each of her autographs included a copy of the next book, The Demise of Selma the Spoiled.

I also attended Evangeline Lilly’s panel, where she stated that she anticipates The Squickerwonkers to be an 18-book series. Aaron Sagers hosted the panel.

Overall, Fan Expo Boston 2018 was a success! The convention was well put together, and I look forward to attending next year!
