YouTube Removes ‘The Nun’ Jump-Scare Ad After Complaints from Viewers

If the teasers and trailers are any indications, Corin Hardy’s The Nun is setting up to be one of the most terrifying films of the year. In fact, the film’s previews are so frightening that one of the movie’s recent ads had to be pulled from YouTube for being too scary.

According to Variety, the ad in question was a six-second clip which drew in viewers before completely terrifying them. The ad would play before other videos and featured a standard looking volume icon. The volume icon would indicate an increase in volume level before lowering all the way down to no volume at all. Just as the viewer is focusing on the video to figure out what the issue is with their volume control, The Nun jumps out of nowhere with a blood-curdling scream completely and totally horrifying the viewer.

One unlucky viewer of the ad tweeted out a warning to others. YouTube has since responded to the tweet stating that the video violates a “shocking content policy” before saying it had been removed. Check out the twitter exchange below.

The shocking content policy states that YouTube strives “to avoid offending or shocking users with websites or apps that are inappropriate for our ad network,” citing examples including “gruesome imagery” and “promotions that are likely to shock or scare.” Based on that definition, it clearly sounds like the ad violated their policy.

Directed by Hardy and co-written by The Conjuring‘s James Wan and Gary Dauberman, The Nun stars Oscar-nominated Demian Bichir as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet as local villager Frenchie, Charlotte Hope as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons as the titular character thus reprising her role from Conjuring 2.

The Nun hits theaters on September  7th.
