‘The Middle’ Sue Heck Spin-Off Gets Pilot Production Commitment at ABC

ABC’s The Middle may be over, but Sue Heck still has some stories to tell!

Back in May of this year, news broke that ABC was in the process of developing a spin-off to The Middle which would be centered around the awkward and quirky character, Sue Heck, played by breakout star Eden Sher. On Monday, it was announced that the spin-off series officially received the green light for a pilot production commitment. Original creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline are returning for the spin-off pilot along with Warner Bros. Television.

According to Deadline, “the half-hour single-camera comedy follows the twentysomething adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck (Sher) as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago.”

Though often underrated by television critics, The Middle was a hit with fans and views. Throughout its nine seasons on-air, the series delivered respectable ratings, and in a recent interview with Deadline,  Heisler confirmed that ABC wanted even more episodes to air. She said, “Our ratings have been great and ABC was very clear they did want more seasons — it was our decision to bring it to a close. And hey… I can’t tell you what’s next… gotta save it for the reboot. See you in ten years!”

The series finale gave viewers one final Heck family road trip as well as a glimpse into the family’s future. Particularly, for Sher’s character, we saw Sue as an adult marrying Sean (her brother Axl’s childhood friend). It’s unclear if the series ending would be taken into account for a Sue Heck spin-off.

The Middle also starred Patricia Heaton as Frankie Heck, Neil Flynn as Mike Heck, Charlie McDermott as Axl Heck and Atticus Shaffer as Brick Heck.
