Sony’s Marvel Cinematic Universe May Finally Have a Name

While Spider-Man may have had his official “Homecoming” back to Marvel, Sony still owns the rights to an impressive 900 Marvel characters and they’re ready to expand their supplemental cinematic universe, starting with the upcoming anti-hero film Venom. According to Variety, Sony hopes to be able to ride the wave of Venom’s success to create “a series of sequels and standalone films featuring heroes and villains who populate the Spider-Man universe.” In order to do that though, they need a name much like Marvel has the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and DC has the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). So, what have they come up with?

The SUMC or Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.

Apparently, this is just what Sony is referring to the Universe as internally, so there is still a possibility that the franchise-defining name could change, which we slightly hope it does seeing as it’s doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

The studio has already made plans for their next chapter in SUMC with Morbius starring Jared Leto. The film follows the frequent Spider-Man villain Michael Morbius, a biochemist who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. They have also put The Equalizer 2’s Richard Wenk in the pipeline to write a screenplay for Kraven the Hunter.

[row]“We’re focused on being faithful to the comics…Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters. There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique.” said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures. [/row]

While Sony would surely like to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear in one of their SUMC films and vice-versa with theirs in the MCU, the two universes will remain separate for now. A lot of it will hinge on the success of Venom, which will most likely be rated PG-13, despite fans wishing for R, so that it could one day feature the highly anticipated crossover between the two. In addition to that point, by keeping Spider-Man out of their Universe’s name entirely, it gives Sony the opportunity to expand their lineup to films that are outside of his realm.

What do you think of the potential name for Sony’s Universe? Venom will be hitting theaters on October 5, 2018 and you can check out the official trailer below!
