‘Infinity War’ Director Compares Star-Lord and Peter Pan

One of the enticing things about directing a movie like Infinity War is the ability to work with so many different characters from a single universe that you normally wouldn’t. The Russo’s got the chance to work with a lot of the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, but when it came to filming Infinity War, it was Chris Pratt’s character Peter Quill/Star-Lord that really stood out to them from a narrative perspective.

[row]”Quill is a very interesting character to us. He’s sort of like a Peter Pan character,” Joe Russo said. “His mother was dying of cancer, he was kidnapped at the age of 10 and raised by pirates. He’s unique, and what’s fun about him is he’s very flawed and he’s emotionally damaged. His mother’s been murdered…”[/row]

[row]”Murdered his own father,” co-writer Christopher Markus added.[/row]

[row]”That’s right.” Joe echoed. “His girlfriend’s about to die in the movie. So this is a guy who has incredible catharsis in his life.”[/row]

Movie-goers probably left the theater with mixed feelings about Quill after he thwarted the Avengers efforts to defeat Thanos, but aside from Thor, he has really been going through some things in both Infinity War and Gaurdians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While he does have a youthful and “Peter Pan” type spirit, he let the build-up of his emotions get the best of him come Infinity War and fans can’t fault him for finally breaking.

[row]“I mean, look, he’s a character who’s gone through a lot of pain. He’s lost a lot of people in his life…So if you can’t understand someone making a human choice like that, I don’t know if you understand humanity very well. But he is a flawed character, and that’s what’s so compelling about him,” Joe Russo said in a recent interview with Comicbook.com[/row]

[row]“That moment is very emotionally truthful, and I think that’s why we bought it in the moment and that’s why we loved it as a storytelling point because it made him so vulnerable,” Anthony Russo echoed. [/row]

Quill was one of the heroes that fell victim to Thanos’ snap so it’s uncertain how his decision will play into Avengers 4, and on a bigger scope, there’s still a lot up in the air when it comes to his own franchise Gaurdians of the Galaxy. With director James Gunn having been fired for old offensive tweets and no new director having been named as his replacement, the future of Guardians is also in a bit of limbo.

Avengers 4 hits theaters April 2019.
