Amy Jo Johnson talks 25 Years of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Interview)

2 weeks ago,I had the pleasure of attending Raleigh Supercon as press for Fan Fest News and had a chance to speak with the OG Pink Ranger herself, Amy Jo Johnson.  Growing up in the 1990’s a kid, odds are you either wanted to be Kimberly or wanted to date her. As a official member of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan club back then, if you had told me I would have a chance to interview Amy as a grown up, I may have died right there on the spot a happy child. The fact  that we got to chat Power Rangers? Icing on the cake.

The Power Rangers burst onto American screens this month 25 years ago, and the kids TV landscape was changed forever.  Multiple TV Seasons and countless films later, Power Rangers is still going strong. I thought it would be quite fitting to chat with an original Ranger about her time on the show and what she is up to 25 years later.

What about Kimberly does she think still resonates with fans all these years later?

“Honestly, I’m not too sure! I think at the time, especially for the people who were kids when it first aired, it was because she was a strong girl fighting monsters? I dont know!(laughs) This show had something special about it that has stuck with fans for a long time and it’s really cool just to be a part of that.”

There are new generations of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans being created every day. What does her child think about her mom being Kimberly?

“My 9 year old daughter Francesca has not gotten into the Power Rangers, but I do see other kids getting into partly because it’s on Netflix. But (my daughter and I) watched it a couple of times, and she wasnt impressed.(laughs)”

What do you cherish the most about your time on Power Rangers?

“I think the friendships that we made and the people that are still in my life from the show is what is most important to me(25 years later).”

What are you up to now?

“I’ve been making my own films. My debut feature film is called The Space Between. It’s available for purchase on iTunes and Google Play. If you go to my website, you can see all the platforms where it is currently available. I also have three other short films that I’ve done and I’m shooting a new movie called Tammy’s Always Dying in the Fall. Writing and Directing is my new passion and I love it way more than I ever did acting.”
