There Are Two ‘24’ Spin-Off Series in the Works!

Just days ago, we learned that a prequel to the hit television series 24 was in the works. During Thursday’s Television Critics Association presentations from Fox, it was revealed that there are actually TWO potential series in the works.

The first series is the prequel which would focus on the origin story of the shows main character, Jack Bauer (originally played by Kiefer Sutherland). The second spin-off will take the franchise in a completely different direction as it will focus around a legal drama storyline rather than anti-terrorism efforts.

Fox CEO and Chairman Gary Newman spoke about the legal drama spin-off during TCA. He said:

“The idea of moving the franchise from terrorism and security into the legal world is something we talked about as far back as season 3 or 4 of 24 where, from time to time, there would be discussions of spinoffs. You have to look for an arena where the stakes are high and time matters. [The legal version of 24] deals with an execution of a prisoner and there are just 24 hours left until the execution is supposed to take place. So, the stakes are high and it potentially has a lot of the same values as the original 24. Regardless of the political climate, the time’s always right for a show of that type.”

As for the prequel, he said, “People love Jack Bauer and [we] would tell a story that I think the audience would very much connect with — of how he became that character. It would be set in the same world of security.”

The original 24 series ran for eight seasons from 2001 to 2010 with each season containing 24 episodes. The show followed Bauer in a race against the clock in order to diffuse terrorist subplots. Each season took place over the course of one full day with each episode representing one hour within that day.

In addition to Sutherland as Jack Bauer, the original show also starred Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe O’Brian, Carlos Bernard as Tony Almeida and Elisha Cuthbert as Kim Bauer.
