‘Friends’ to be Recognized by TCA with Prestigious Heritage Award

“So no one told you life was gonna be this way…” (clap, clap, clap, clap)

Admit it. You totally sang that line instead of reading it, and you probably also clapped along at the end, right? That’s because, even if you haven’t seen an episode of the series, everyone knows about Friends. That’s exactly why the Television Critics Association (TCA) will be honoring the series with a special award this summer.

On Saturday, August 4th, the TCA will honor the NBC series Friends with the prestigious Heritage Award. TCA president Daniel Fienberg said:

In addition to Friends being honored, iconic actress Rita Moreno (One Day at a Time) will also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Friends aired for 10 wonderful and hilarious seasons on NBC before going off the air for good in 2004. The series starred Courtney Cox as Monica Geller, Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Matthew Perry who played Chandler Bing and Matt LeBlanc who played Joey Tribbiani.

With the success of television reboots recently, fans have been clamoring for a reboot or reunion of their six favorite friends, but according to pretty much all involved, that won’t be happening. Matthew Perry spoke previously about his fears of doing a reboot. He said, “I have this recurring nightmare. I’m not kidding about this. When I’m asleep, I have this nightmare that we do Friends again and nobody cares.  We do a whole series, we come back, and nobody cares about it. So if anybody asks me, I’m gonna say no. The thing is: We ended on such a high. We can’t beat it. Why would we go and do it again? I was on a sitcom for 10 years, and it was the greatest. It gave me every opportunity I ever had.”

More recently, Jennifer Aniston shared her thoughts on revisiting the popular television series. While some other members of the cast may not be interested in rebooting the show, Aniston said, “we could just give it some time and then Lisa, Courteney, and I could reboot The Golden Girls and spend our last years together on wicker furniture.”

Both Friends and Rita Moreno will be honored at the 34th Television Critics Association ceremony on Saturday, August 5th.
