‘Avengers’ Star Anthony Mackie Is the New Lead for Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon’

Netflix is doing some real-life ‘altering’ today as they have officially announced Avengers/Captain America star Anthony Mackie will be replacing Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs in the upcoming second season of Altered Carbon.

There are a few reasons as to why the series is undergoing the changeup. The first is that Kinnaman was only secured for a one-year deal with Netflix and he recently signed on to star in Amazon’s Hanna alongside his co-star from The Killing, Mirelle Enos. Not to mention, in the Richard K. Morgan sci-fi novels the series is based on,  the narrative spans hundreds of years with Kovac becoming a myriad of different bodies, or “sleeves” as they’re referred to on the show. Back in February, Kinnaman confirmed toTVGuide that the series would most likely take on an “anthology” format moving forward.

Anthony Mackie is probably best known for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Captain America films as well as Avengers: Infinity War. Altered Carbon marks his first series regular role on the small screen but he did play Martin Luther King, Jr. alongside Bryan Cranston’s in HBO’s All the Way in 2016. He recently lent his voice to season 3 of HBO’s Animals as well.

In addition to Mackie’s casting, it was also announced that The Flash’s Alison Schapker would be coming on board the series as co-showrunner joining Laeta Kalogridis. Season 2 of Altered Carbon will be eight episodes, as opposed to season 1’s 10, and is expected to drop on Netflix sometime in 2019.

Here’s the official synopsis for the show:

[row]An intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.[/row]
