Jane Fonda Gives an Update on the ‘9 to 5’ Sequel

Earlier this year, news broke that the 1980s classic film 9 to 5 was in the process of getting the reboot treatment. The news first broke back in February that the original cast members Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin were ready, and eagerly waiting to reprise their roles though, at the time, no formal confirmation of their involvement had been announced.

That time has finally come. On Wednesday, Jane Fonda confirmed during the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour that the sequel is moving ahead. Fonda was present during the HBO portion of the TCA event for her new documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts. When asked about the reboot, she said:

That’s super awesome news for anyone who is a fan of the trailblazing classic film. In the original film, Parton, Fonda, and Tomlin starred with Dabney Coleman who played their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss.  The trio played secretaries in an office who were out to get even with their boss after having their ideas stolen, being passed over for promotions and enduring inappropriate advances and harassment in the workplace.  The film was a huge hit as was Parton’s theme song by the same name.  The movie even inspired a Broadway musical in 2009.

The new rendering of the classic film, which is said to focus on a new group of three young women who are dealing with sexism and chauvinism in the workplace, will be produced by Stranger Things‘ Shawn Levy of 21 Laps along with Resnick and Jonathan Baruch of StoryBy Entertainment.
