‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Photos So Far

Production on the upcoming ninth season of The Walking Dead has been kicking it into high gear over the past few months. Recently the very first official photos were released from the season nine set and, really, we have more questions than anything.

The first photo released shows fan favorite Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus). Dixon is known for being kind of a loner so it’s no surprise that he is pictured here alone. In the background, it looks like a blurred chain-linked fence and he definitely seems to be standing in a dried out corn field or maybe a wheat field. He appears to be slightly alarmed by something off camera and we are dying to know what it is!

The second photo released is a striking comparison to the first. Here, we see Michonne (played by Danai Gurira) channeling her inner Oregon Trail. The photo seems to have an old West vibe as Michonne sits on horseback leading two a horse-drawn wagon and carriage. In the background, she is surrounded by some familiar faces including Oceanside’s Cyndie (played by Sydney Park) and the former Savior/Hilltop’s newest member Alden (played by Callan McAuliffe). Michonne and her crew are surrounding by green, leafy trees which seems like a totally different location than were we see Daryl in the previous photo.

So, what do these two images mean? It’s hard to tell! But one thing’s for sure, we know that The Walking Dead will undergo some serious changes in its upcoming ninth season. Co-Executive Producer and long-time writer Angela Kang was promoted to Showrunner for the ninth season.  Scott Gimple (former showrunner) will now be Chief Content Officer overseeing the entire Walking Dead franchise including both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

Kang has recently confirmed that the series will experience a time jump in the upcoming season and the recently released season nine key art also seems to be hinting at some new beginnings.

Additionally, it has been reported that both Andrew Lincoln (who plays Rick Grimes) and Lauren Cohan (who plays Maggie Greene (Rhee)) will be leaving the series before the season’s end. Cohan was recently cast in ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier which has been picked up to series during the 2018 television upfronts. Both Cohan and Lincoln are said to appear in just six episodes in the upcoming season.

The Walking Dead will be taking over San Diego Comic-Con on Friday of this week where hopefully we’ll get some juicy season nine news. The series will return to AMC with new episodes starting this fall.
