Sgt. Abraham Ford reporting for duty! Well… directing duties that is. Comicbook.com has confirmed that Michael Cudlitz will return to The Walking Dead for his directorial debut in the seventh episode of season 9, which is slated to premiere later this year.

Cudlitz played fan favorite, and King of one-liners, Abraham Ford for three seasons on the hit AMC zombie series until his character met an unfortunate fate at the hands of Negan in the season 7 premiere. While marking Cudlitz’s first time behind the camera, his directing duties also mark the first time an actor from the series will direct an episode as well.

The return of Michael Cudlitz is sure to bring some joy to fans of The Walking Dead who are still coping with the recent shakeups taking place in the upcoming season, including the exits of both Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, whose final episodes will occur at some point in season 9. Although, while their departures are upsetting, there have been some exciting announcements as well including new showrunner Angela Kang confirming a time-jump and the return of Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh.

Despite having been killed off one of the most-watched series on television, Cudlitz’s television career has only flourished. He will be starring in the new ABC comedy, The Kids are Alright, which follows a pair of working-class parents in an Irish-Catholic family trying to raise their eight kids during the 1970’s. The series will premiere on ABC later this year! Cudlitz also recently guest starred on an episode of Young Sheldon and will also appear in the upcoming movie Driven alongside Judy Greer, Lee Pace, Jason Sudeikis, and Corey Stoll.

The cast and creators of The Walking Dead will be participating in a highly anticipated panel at San-Deigo Comic-Con next weekend where they will hopefully release a full season 9 trailer and release date! Are you excited to see Cudlitz return to his ol’ stomping grounds on The Walking Dead? Let us know!

Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn't be as proud as I am to be eerily similar to Nick Miller in real life, I do hope to one day write my own "Pepperwood Chronicles'.
