Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Origin Movie Officially Gets the Greenlight

DC fans, get ready. It’s officially happening! It was announced on Wednesday that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker origin movie is officially a go as the production has just received the green light from Warner Bros.!

News of Phoenix’s involvement with the film first broke earlier this year in February though, at that time, he was said to be in talks for the role. Just last month, it was reported that Phoenix had officially signed on for the part and would potentially begin filming this fall. Now, it’s confirmed that the Joker origin film will begin production in September with Phoenix set to star.

Todd Phillips is on board to direct the film which originally had Martin Scorsese tapped to produce. Unfortunately, Deadline reports that Scorsese is no longer involved due to his prior commitments and projects. Instead, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Scorsese’s producer, and Richard Baratta are up for the task.

In addition to Phoenix’s Joker origin film, there is another film surrounding the DC villain also being developed with Jared Leto set to star. Leto portrayed the role of the Joker in Warner Bros. and DC’s 2016 film Suicide Squad. Phoenix’s version, however, will fall under the still unnamed new banner from DC comics.

Of course, at this stage of development, very little else is known about the upcoming film. No additional casting information or a premiere date has been released, but it will be interesting to watch this film come together over the next several months.

DC certainly has their hands full with their line up of blockbuster releases kicking off this December with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. Additionally, production is in full swing for the Wonder Woman sequel titled Wonder Woman 1984 which is set to release on November 1, 2019, and filming just recently wrapped on Zachary Levi’s Shazam! which is set to be released on April 5, 2019.
