DC’s ‘Aquaman’ Director James Wan Shares What He Thinks is Marvel’s Most Incredible Accomplishment

Often times, Marvel and DC are pitted against each other for the coveted spot of “best superhero cinematic universe,” however, the truth is, the two studios have nothing but respect for each other.  In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director James Wan was discussing DC’s upcoming and highly-anticipated film Aquaman when the topic of rival studio Marvel came up in the conversation.

In fact, during the shift in their conversation, Wan took the opportunity to point out what he thinks is the most incredible accomplishment that Marvel has achieved (so far) to date. Wan compliments Marvel on their ability to appeal not only to an American audience but also a global audience with its cast of comic book characters. Wan said:

[row]“I actually think the most incredible thing [Marvel] did is making Captain America and Thor accessible to the mainstream — especially outside of the United States,” Wan said. “The moment you can make a character called ‘Captain America’ work in Russia and China, then anything is possible.”[/row]

It’s true that Marvel has great success in both the domestic and global box offices, and that’s something that Wan is hoping to also achieve when Aquaman dives into theaters later on this year.

After his first appearance in 2016’s Batman V. Superman, Jason Momoa reprises his role as Arthur Curry (aka. Aquaman, half-human, half-Atlantean and King of the Seven Seas, ruler of Atlantis). The film also stars Amber Heard (as Mera), Patrick Wilson (as the villainous Orm/Ocean Master), Temuera Morrison (as Tom Curry), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (as Queen Atlanna), Dolph Lundgren (as King Nereus) and Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (as Nuidis Vulko).

Aquaman is directed by Wan who is best known for his work on The Conjuring and Insidious films. This is Wan’s first dip into the superhero world. He also directed Furious 7 which ended up being the top grossing film of the Fast and Furious franchise. Peter Safran is producing along with Zack and Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

Aquaman will splash down into theaters on December 21, 2018.
