‘Ant Man & The Wasp’: Marvel Scoops Another Top Box Office Spot

Whether you love Ant-Man or prefer Thor, Marvel’s latest release is already making it out big. Ant-Man & the Wasp scored the top place at the box office this weekend and is Marvel’s 20th consecutive number one as far as box office estimates go.

Opening with an impressive $76 million, which even though it comes short of the expected $83 million, this is a big win for Marvel as it recorded 33% increase from 2015’s Ant-Man which made it at $57.2 million.

In comparison to Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & the Wasp’s numbers look very pale save for its upgrade from the previous film. A 30 percent dip in sales between Friday and Saturday saw the opening weekend estimate suffer a major blow. Keeping in mind that a number of international markets are yet to open, the film which is 45 percent ahead of its predecessor and taking off with $85 million, it is safe to say that Ant-Man & the Wasp is off to a good start. At global opening, they are looking at $161 million which of course greatly depends on the actual numbers once tallied.

Ant-Man & the Wasp is the third Marvel Studios film to open in first place this year and what this means for Disney is five of the seven biggest openings so far this year. Other films that have made headlines and are worth mentioning are; The First Purge, the fourth of its franchise, which opened at $31.1 million and Incredibles 2 which beat its fellow Pixar film Finding Dory, to be the top grossing animated film ever with $503 million.
