Colony episode 3.10 is very much focused on the mysterious outliers. Who are they? Why do some walk free while others are in captivity?
Colony continues to unveil some details while keeping others close to the vest. We learn about more outliers on the loose. Katie and Will reconnect and find they are indeed on the same team. The gang gets back together when both Will and Katie join Broussard on a fact-finding mission. Amy refuses to partner with Broussard if Will stays on board. Snyder goes on a mission of his own with IGA colleague Garland in tow.
Will and Katie finally open up to one another about their concerns about the Seattle colony. They realize they are both suspicious about the placement of refugees as well as their own safety. Katie uses her job to acquire a list of other colonists labeled OCS (code for outliers) like Will.
The Bowmans and Broussard visit one of the men on the list named O’Neill. (Okay, they actually pounce on him at work and tackle him to the ground, but they’re still “friendlies” per Broussard.) Katie shares a list of some of the outliers and asks O’Neill if he recognizes anyone. O’Neill is suspicious of their motivations but agrees to take the list.
Katie is clearly back on the team, but Amy wants to back out. She continues to have concerns about Will’s stability. Will makes a visit to her at the hospital and tells her that he let Snyder go. He also reveals that he lost Charlie. Will implores Amy to return to the team, especially for Broussard’s sake. She does not seem swayed.
Garland makes a visit to Seattle to join Snyder in investigating Everett Kynes. It seems that Garland is focused primarily on discrediting Kynes. Snyder plays along, but I suspect he has some ulterior motives all his own.
In or Out-liers
We learn early in the episode that O’Neill is part of a team of outliers working with one of Kynes’ security guards named Harris. Actually, we find out through Snyder’s super sleuthing that his real name is Victor Resnick of the United States Army Delta Force. Why the alias?
Resnick speaks openly with Kynes about his team of outliers. When Resnick talks to his team, however, he talks about waiting for Kynes to make a mistake and reveal their “target”. Where do allegiances really lie? Resnick expresses concerns about the team revealing itself to soon, but to whom?
Both Snyder and the Bowmans are trying to understand why some outliers walk “freely” in the colony while others are placed in the stasis chambers. I say “freely” with hesitation since we know Kynes is tracking everyone through their phones.
We know that some outliers are sent to the chambers while others are not. We know that some outliers are on a team while others like Will seem to be on their own. With Kynes’ colonial autonomy, it sounds like the IGA does not know about the loose outliers. What is the plan for these other outliers? Snyder and Garland want answers to these questions, but Katie and Will seem more interested in physically rallying them all together.
Meeting the girlfriend
Bram continues to take a paternal role with younger sister Gracie. While Will and Katie are “at work” tracking down outliers, the kids still need to eat.
Bram takes Gracie to dinner at Meadow’s house. We meet her father, Sal, who seems like a friendly fellow. Who else is coming to this dinner though? Sal mentions “everyone else” being en route.
I continue to suspect some mystery around Meadow’s family. Does anyone else feel the same way?
- Kynes’ security guard Harris, aka Victor Resnick, is played by E.J. Bonilla. Bonilla starred in the National Geographic mini-series The Long Road Home with Sarah Wayne Callies.
- Lin Oeding expertly directed ‘Sea Spray’. Did you notice the name of the hardware store where outlier O’Neill works? It was “Oeding’s Hardware”.
The episode ends with O’Neill surreptitiously passing a note to Will in the park. The note suggests a meeting at the Pike Pine boxing gym where O’Neill works out with other outliers on Resnick’s team. Will Amy consider Will’s plea to return to the team? Might all four of them meet these other outliers?
Katie suggests bringing Bram into their work with Broussard. Will does not mention that he already enlisted Bram’s help with the interrogation maneuver. What will happen if and when Katie finds out that Bram has already been involved? It makes me a little nervous.
Snyder and Garland have their sights set on a maneuver that will draw out Kynes’ agenda. What is Snyder’s true agenda in all of this though? When he speaks to Kynes’ about the theft of host technology, he acts like he knows much less than he already does. Garland and Snyder are working together, but I do not think they have the exact same goal in mind.
Colony returns for three more episodes in the third season. I cannot wait to find out more about the mystery outliers and what else Snyder is truly up to in Seattle. No matter what, I am so glad that Will and Katie are working as a team with Broussard again.
