New Study Shows Netflix is the Most Popular Platform for TV Viewing

Whether it’s watching live via cable, or using one of the many streaming service platforms available, nowadays, everyone has their viewing method of choice when it comes to watching television shows. Thanks to a new recent study, we now know which viewing method is the most popular.

According to a recent study conducted by Wall Street firm Cowen & Co., U.S. consumers prefer subscription-based video viewing over the traditional cable/broadcast networks. More specifically, viewers prefer to watch their television through the Netflix streaming services as opposed to Hulu, YouTube or other services available.

The study conducted in May surveyed 2500 U.S. adults who were asked, “Which platforms do you use most often to view video content on TV?” According to Variety who reported on the results, Netflix came in as the most popular with 27% of those surveyed saying they prefer the streaming platform most. Basic cable came in second with 20% of those surveyed saying that is their method of choice followed by broadcast which came in at 18% and finally YouTube with 18% to round out the top 4 most popular methods.

When the survey hones in on the younger demographic (adults aging between 18-34), Netflix increases its lead over the other viewing methods with a dramatic 40% of those surveyed to YouTube’s 17%, basic cable’s 12.6%, Hulu’s 7.6% and broadcast’s 7.5%.

With its rotating catalog of featured shows and films, Netflix has made a push in recent years to really up their game when it comes to content. A major factor in their success has certainly been this exclusive content. In 2016, the streaming giant bought the exclusive rights to stream Marvel, Disney, Star Wars and Pixar films. Last year, Netflix launched it’s first original feature film with the Will Smith headlined Bright with others already in the works. Additionally, the streaming service’s original series content (ex. GLOW, Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black) has earned high praise from viewers and critics alike.
