Rebecca Ferguson Joining Ewan McGregor in ‘The Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’

The Warner Bros. film adaptation of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep took another step forward on Thursday. The Greatest Showman actress Rebecca Ferguson is in talks to star in the film opposite Ewan McGregor, whose casting was announced earlier this month.

King’s Doctor Sleep novel was released in 2013 and is a sequel to his 1977 classic The Shining, which was made into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1980. Doctor Sleep follows the adult version of Danny Torrance (McGregor) who is trying to deal with the trauma of what he experienced as a child at the Overlook Hotel.

Mike Flanagan (Netflix’s adaptation of Gerald’s Game) is onboard to direct with Trevor Macy and John Berg producing. According to Variety, plot details for Doctor Sleep are as follows:

[row]”Doctor Sleep begins as Torrance becoming a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls the pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group with similar abilities. They’ve found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine when they are suffering painful deaths.”[/row]

Rebecca Ferguson was most recently seen in the role of Jenny Lund in the fan favorite film The Greatest Showman. She can be seen next in the upcoming Mission Impossible: Fallout which premieres next month.

Doctor Sleep is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2020.
