What are the Plans for Future ‘Star Wars’ Movies? Here’s What we Know

A few months ago we were caught up in a director shuffle for the upcoming films, and announcements of new ones just kept coming! This was welcome to some fans but others even disregard the newer films as part of the Star Wars universe. Whichever side you’re on, there are more shakeups happening right now that are bound to effect just how often we get to giggle at the inexcusable cuteness of droids or become invested in space cowboy-or cowgirls.

A new report is disclosing Disney and Lucasfilm’s talks about re-evaluating their plans for future Star Wars movies due to the low performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Lucasfilm haven’t slowed down development, but they are licking their wounds.”

The final installment of the main series of the films, Star Wars: Episode IX directed by The Force Awakens J.J. Abrams, is set to be released on Dec. 20, 2019, but the Lucasfilm team is figuring out the specifics and direction for the films to released after Episode IX.

The Boba Fett spinoff is still in production, with Simon Kinberg and James Mangold writing the script with Mangold set to be the director, but due to the poor performance of one of the stars in the Star Wars universe, the Boba Fett spinoff might be scaled down.
Sources say that Lucasfilm is trying to figure out their next move in marketing, and production in order for the film to wow the fans next time. Nothing from the Studio or Stephen Daldry’s agency has come out about his intentions to direct the Fate of an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off as rumors suggest.

Disney has released four films in the Star Wars franchise after acquiring Lucasfilm for $4 billion in October 2012, with the first three films grossing between $1 billion and $2 billion each. Whereas almost a month after its worldwide release, Solo has grossed only $344 million globally.

“They were developing anything and everything,” a THR executive source said. “It was a case of them stuffing so much sausage and not try to break the casing.”

Other than Star Wars: Episode IX, Disney has two official films in the works and Lucasfilm’s new series of movies written by Game of Thrones show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as Rian Johnson’s separate trilogy of his own. Jon Favreau is also executive producing a live-action Star Wars TV show that is set to air on Disney’s new streaming surface.
