20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for their upcoming film The Hate U Give, which is based on the critically acclaimed young adult novel written by Angie Thomas. After just one viewing of the trailer, it’s evident that The Hate U give is not only going to be a remarkably important film, but also one that’s going to pack an emotional gut punch.

The movie follows Starr Carter (Everything, Everything’s Amandla Stenberg) a teenage girl whose torn between the vastly different worlds of her predominantly black lower-income neighborhood and the suburban private school she attends with mostly white students, including her boyfriend Chris (Riverdale’s KJ Apa). When her childhood friend Khalil (Aglee Smith) is fatally shot by a white police officer, Starr faces pressures from all sides of the community and must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

The movie also features an amazing adult cast including Russell Hornsby and Regina Hall as Starr’s parents, Maverick and Lisa Carter and Common (below) plays Starr’s Uncle Carlos who just so happens to be a police officer. Captain America’s Anthony Mackie plays King, a local gang leader and Sabrina Carpenter plays Starr’s best friend Hailey.

The movie will be directed by Notorious’ George Tillman Jr. with the screenplay written by Audrey Wells. The Hate U Give hits theaters on October 19th! Check out the full trailer below!
