Paul McCartney Just Raised the Bar for All Future ‘Carpool Karaoke’ Segments

What started out as a one-time sketch for Red Nose Day soon became a viral sensation. Now, the Carpool Karaoke segment from The Late Late Show with Jame Corden has become a late night television staple hosting some of the hottest musicians and stars on the planet.

Last week, a true living icon stepped into Corden’s car to help him cruise around London and sing some tunes. Legendary musician Paul McCartney joined Corden for a Carpool Karaoke segment like we’ve never seen before.

It all started out just like every other Carpool Karaoke begins. Corden made a call on his phone asking for some help on his way to work. Corden says into the phone, “Hey mate! I’m in Liverpool and I’m wondering if you could help. Yeah, I need somebody. Not just anybody. Can you please, please help me?”  Of course, Corden is paraphrasing one of the Beatles most famous songs Help!

Corden’s lyrical coercion worked because whoever he was speaking with on the other end of that phone line finally agrees to join the carpool. Just then, in walks iconic former Beatle, Paul McCartney. The two buckle up and begin driving for a tour around Liverpool. You can’t drive without music though, so Corden turns on some tunes. While Corden and McCartney drive, they sing along with some of the Beatles greatest hits including Drive My Car, Penny Lane, Blackbird, and many others as well as a brand new song McCartney just released called Come on to Me. They visit McCartney’s old childhood home and spoke about how McCartney’s music usually displays a common theme of positivity, joy, love, and togetherness – all things which the world needs so much of right now.

One of the most beautiful moments of the whole segment is when McCartney tells Corden about where he found the inspiration to write the iconic hit song Let It Be. McCartney said that during a time of stress and doubt in the sixties, he had a dream in which his deceased mother came to him and reassured him that everything would be ok. She said to him, “Let it be.” McCartney says the next morning, he woke up and wrote the song based on her words from his dream. What an incredible story! Corden was clearly touched by McCartney’s story of inspiration. While the two sang along with the hit song, Corden had tears in his eyes which he just couldn’t hold back any longer. It’s perhaps the most touching moment yet in Carpool Karaoke history.

The final portion of the video is perhaps the best. Corden and McCartney go back to a pub in which the Beatles used to frequent. They plan to have some fun with the patrons there. with McCartney hidden from sight, Corden asks one of the patrons to play something on the jukebox. When she does, much to the surprise and delight of all who are in attendance, McCartney appears from behind a curtain with a full band to play more of his hit songs. Word soon gets around and the crowd is scrambling towards the jukebox to play more.

This was truly one of the best Carpool Karaoke skits to date. Check out this epic edition of Carpool Karaoke in the full video below:
