Star Trek Franchise To Expand with Alex Kurtzman at the Helm
A few days after Alex Kurtzman was named as the new showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, the writer/producer has renewed his overall deal with CBS Television studios. The agreement states that Kurtzman is supposed to oversee the expansion of the Star Trek franchise with series, miniseries and even animation. This is exciting for the Star Trek viewers who should be expecting more from this renowned franchise. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Kurtzman’s five year extension is worth around $25 million.
In 2009, Kurtzman co-wrote the bid-screen reboot of Star Trek and helped in creating the franchise’s television revival. Following the firing of Aaron Haberts and Gretchen Berg due to allegations that they had harassed the show’s writers, Alex Kurtzman was named as show runner of CBS All Access’ Discovery. seeing as the drama is in the sixth episode of season 2, Kurtzman will begin oversight of the show amid production.
The president of CBS Television Studios, David Stapf said in a statement that the list of writer/producer/directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with is very short and Kurtzman and his team top it.
“His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our Studio, dating back seven years to the launch of Hawaii Five-0, and we are thrilled that he, Heather and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.” Said David.
The writer/producer, Alex, is best known for his film and television collaboration with longtime partner Roberto Orci; they worked on projects such as The Island, Mission: Impossible III, the Transformers franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fringe and Sleepy Hollow together. However, in 2014, Roberto and Kurtzman parted ways and thus Kurtzman started directing Universal Pictures’ The Mummy, and oversee the studio’s Dark Universe plans with Chris Morgan. Kurtzman and Roberto left Universal Pictures in November.
