‘Incredibles 2’ Breaks Animation Box Office Record Its First Weekend

To put it simply, Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 just has an incredible first weekend at the box office! The sequel, which hit theaters this past weekend 14 years after the original, premiered to $183.2 million at the domestic box office, making it the biggest opening for an animated film since Pixar’s Finding Dory in 2016. That number also makes it the eighth-best opening weekend of all time in the US.

Globally, Incredibles 2 has already made more than $230 million, which is exciting for Disney seeing as the film was projected to have a $135 million opening weekend and their most recent project Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed with the smallest opening for a Star Wars film since 2002. It’s also the third largest opening of the year behind Disney’s two other projects  AvengersInfinity War and Black Panther and the second biggest June opening behind 2015’s Jurassic World.

Incredibles 2 takes place immediately after the first film and follows Helen’s Elastagirl as she’s out saving the world leaving Bob’s Mr. Incredible at home to take care of the kids and Jack Jack’s emerging powers. It features a returning voice cast of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, and Samuel L. Jackson with new actors Bob Odenkirk, Sophia Bush and Jonathan Banks all joining.

It seems that even more than a decade Incredibles fans are still loyal to the superheroic family. Back in 2004 The Incredibles went on to earn over $630 million worldwide and won Oscars for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Sound Editing. So, with that kind of success, it’s no surprise that audiences turned out in droves to see the follow-up!
