‘The Flash’ Gives Room to Stretch! Elongated Man a Season 5 Regular.

CW hit TV series The Flash will be bringing back fan-favorite character Elongated Man as a series regular for Season 5. Played by actor Hartley Sawyer, Elongated Man began his recurring role on Season 4 as morally compromised detective Ralph Dibney. It was after exposure to dark matter from the Speed Force that he turned into a metahuman with an ability to stretch and transform.

While Mr. Dibney was initially frightened and disturbed by his newfound abilities, he eventually learned to embrace them. After crossing paths with Team Flash, he was not only taught how to refine his unique powers but was also given guidance in using them… to serve the better good. Unfortunately, Ralph Dibney was not exactly a cooperative student and it took some time before he recognized the errors of his way. His catalyst for change occurred after a pivotal poor decision resulting in a young girl’s hospitalization that could have easily been her demise. The guilt-ridden Mr. Dibney quickly realized the true impact of his actions.

“Unlike most metahumans, however, he became Barry Allen’s latest protégé instead of turning to a life of crime, and the season followed Ralph as he learned how to be a hero.” -Source: Entertainment Weekly

As we all know, no one is perfect and I believe it is the flaws that allow fans to have an emotional connection to certain characters. We see Ralph Dibney fight inner turmoil and external forces that ultimately bring people closer to him. Even though he has made mistakes in the past, we are able to forgive because we see ourselves reflected in his actions. Team Flash ultimately becomes Ralph Dibney’s closest group of friends and it is with their help that he has learned to become a true hero, Elongated Man!

Congrats to Hartley Sawyer, I look forward to seeing more of Ralph Dibney/Elongated man as The Flash returns for Season 5 this fall. What do you think the future has in store for Elongated Man? Let us know at Fan Fest News.
