‘Clueless’ is Officially Becoming a Musical

Had enough of Cher Horowitz? As if! We can never get enough of Cher’s optimism or her eye for fashion.

Clueless is coming to stage!

Screenwriter and director for the film, Amy Heckerling is bringing Cher and the gang back to life with the help of The New Group, an off-Broadway theater company.

Clueless is a modern take on Jane Austen’s Emma. According to Heckerling, we can expect a fresh take on the beloved tale. We can also look forward to a score that reimagines 90s hits into ingenious parodies and yearning monologues for those lovesick characters.

“It’s a jukebox musical,” explains Heckerling. “It’s as if the ’90s was one year, and we’re taking songs from the ’90s and playing with the lyrics to make them tell the story. We just had a sing-through/read-through the other day, and it went really well. They’re just wonderful young actors. A lot of them are coming [to the retrospective].”

Director Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and choreographer Kelly Devine (Come From Away) have signed on to the project, but there are no cast announcements yet. There have been readings and labs for the project, but nothing has been set in stone.

Who would you like to see play Cher? What about Josh or Ty? It would be awesome to see Alicia Silverstone or Paul Rudd reprise their roles, but who knows.

Clueless, The Musical opens at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center in New York City this November.
