Chloe Dykstra Warns Readers of Emotional Abuse, Sexual Assault

During the past year, many women have come out to share their stories of sexual assault by the #MeToo movement. Another woman has now come to share her story, and this time, she comes from the Geek/Nerd community-one that hits close to home.

Chloe Dykstra is an actress and a cosplayer. According to her bio on Medium, she likes dogs as well:

I do the acting thing and show up in weird places on the internet. I also like dogs, but not in the weird way.

Dykstra posted an open letter to Medium Friday, entitled Rose-Colored Glasses: A Confession which revealed her story of emotional and sexual abuse in a previous relationship. Dykstra does not point a finger or name the specific person, but does include the following:

It’s so easy to make judgments about someone you don’t know personally, or maybe do know personally, but not well. It’s the same both ways. “Did they, didn’t they?” I’m here to tell my story, not necessarily intending to point my finger at the man who did it (though that may be an unfortunate consequence for him), but for a different reason.

I watched and supported him as he grew from a mildly successful podcaster to a powerhouse CEO of his own company. He was obsessed with celebrity, being famous, famous people.

Dykstra reveals in the letter that her ex had laid ground rules for her to follow which she felt limited her quality of life. She includes, “I was terrified to piss him off- so I did what he said. …Including let him sexually assault me. Regularly.”
She writes of her first time attending Comic-Con International with him in San Diego, saying that he had strict rules for her to stay in the hotel room, while he went to parties.

Her story includes her claim that when she left her ex after three years, he “blacklisted” her from getting any jobs in the industry, which led to various low points in her life with no support system, including thoughts of suicide.

She adds a PS, which includes a note to her ex and expressing the importance of an apology. She adds that she does have video/audio proof of her claims, but that she is opting not to share them in hope that her ex would do the right thing.

Dykstra says that she feels in a good place in life right now, and felt the last step would be to write this for closure for herself, but also as a warning.

She writes that red flags in unhealthy relationships can be easily overlooked, and adds,

This kind of relationship is so common, and so easy to slip into. Normalizing behavior happens incredibly quickly, and one can lose track of what is acceptable treatment.
