Did You Catch This ‘The Walking Dead’ Easter Egg on the ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Midseason Finale?
Spoiler Alert! The following article contains spoilers from the season 4 midseason finale of Fear the Walking Dead! Read on only if you are caught up.
Sunday night’s explosive midseason finale of Fear the Walking Dead left fans of the series in complete and total shock as the show delivered its biggest death yet.
The episode centered around Madison Clark (played by Kim Dickens) who ultimately ended up sacrificing herself to a heard of walkers in order to save her family. Before her heroic death, we see a flashback during which Madison meets Althea (played by Maggie Grace). Madison is rummaging through Althea’s recorded tapes when some fans caught a glimpse of what appeared to be an Easter Egg referencing two characters from The Walking Dead.
If you blinked, you missed it. Even if you rewound the episode, you still may have missed it, but the labeled tapes did, in fact, contain a nod to Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) and Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt). Fear showrunner Ian Goldberg hinted at the Easter Egg on the Talking Dead aftershow.
“When Madison is rummaging through Al’s tapes, we see they’re all labeled,” said Goldberg. “And each of those tapes, each of those labels, will tell a story. They’re all stories that Al has captured at one point or another in her travels, and if you look closely, some of those names might ring a bell if you’re a fan of the Walking Dead universe, you might get excited about some of the stories that she’s captured.”
Take a look at the box of tapes below. Can you spot the Easter Egg now?
The beat up tape to the far left in the box actually reads, “Abe/Doctor.” Take a closer look below at the replica prop which Chris Hardwick showed the audience during Talking Dead.
Hardwick clearly loved the little reference to The Walking Dead duo. He said,“I think it’s just a nice easter egg that shows how connected the universe is, so I don’t know if we’re ever actually going to see what was on this tape, but it is a fantastic way to see that the worlds are still connected.”
Initially, when the shows announced the epic crossover, many fans speculated that Abraham would be the character to make an appearance. It seemed that Abraham made the most sense since, at the end of season 3, the Fear characters were on their way to Texas, and fans know that Abraham’s journey originated in Texas. Of course, we now know that Morgan Jones (Lennie James) has joined the Fear cast for what is turning out to be the series’ best season yet!
Fear the Walking Dead is on hiatus for the next few months. The series will return for the conclusion of its 4th season on August 12th.
