Supergirl Recap ‘Shelter from the Storm’

This week’s episode found Team Supergirl trying to keep Ruby safe from Reign. After some convincing, Lena finally discloses her location to Alex, who instantly goes to Lex’s mansion to make sure Ruby is protected. Kara and J’onn head off to Sam’s hometown to meet with her mother. Patricia reveals that Sam would draw weird symbols as a child. The symbol is that of Reign, so Patricia knows that her daughter is the evil Kryptonian. Patricia wishes that she hadn’t been so hard on Sam and had been a better mother and grandmother to her and Ruby. Reign appears, using the powers she absorbed from Pestilence and Purity. Kara and J’onn are caught off guard and knocked down. Patricia appeals to her daughter, but Sam is no longer there. Reign kills Patricia.

With the threat of Blight gone, the Legion is heading back to their own timeline. Before they left, Brainiac-5 placed a bug in the DEO and learns that Reign has all the powers of the Worldkillers. He tells Mon-El that Kara has a 50% chance of defeating Reign. If a member of the Legion were to stay behind, the odds jump to 80%. Imra tells Mon-El that it’s okay for him to go back. She knows how much it means to him and that the only reason he’s going back to the future is because of her.

Now that James knows Lena can make Kryptonite, he tries to convince her to tell Supergirl. It was the only thing that could stop Reign, but Lena is scared to. She doesn’t want to ruin the last bit of trust that’s between her and Supergirl. Finally, she relents and tells the truth. Supergirl’s reaction is just as Lena expected. Supergirl takes the Kryptonite and intends to use to on Reign, but she is incredibly upset with Lena, taking the production of the substance personally. J’onn was badly injured during the last fight with Reign, but he insists on going with Kara anyway to use the Kryptonite. That’s when Mon-El appears, saying he’ll be the one to use it against Reign.

Ruby stole Alex’s phone in order to call her mom and that tipped Reign off as to her location. Alex is doing her best to protect Ruby, but Reign is too powerful. Kara and Mon-El appear and fight her off. During the tussle, Reign’s mask is knocked off and Ruby sees the face of her mom. Reign rounds on Ruby, but Kara gets in the way. Earlier in the episode, she got some advice from M’yrnn on how to handle the threat. When he stood up to the White Martians, he appealed to their code. Kara does the same thing, telling Reign that she enacts her own brand of justice on those who deserve it. Ruby is innocent. Her speech gives Mon-El enough time to manufacture bullets out of the Kryptonite and shoot Reign. They take her back to L Corp and Lena will continue to run tests to find a cure. The threat is momentarily subdued, but something is about to happen as the final scene shows a woman running away with a book containing all the information on the Worldkillers.

The trust between Supergirl and Lena is shattered. At the end of the episode, Lena and Kara end up in an elevator together as they go to see Ruby and Lena dumps everything that’s been happening between her and Supergirl on Kara. She admits that you should never meet your heroes because you’ll only be let down. Lena reveals that James told her the truth about breaking into her lab, though he didn’t enter her vault. She says Supergirl stooped to a new low by using someone she cared about against her. That’s something her mother would do. I’m interested to see how Kara reacts to being dragged through the mud like that. She does care about Lena, but was caught up in her own feelings about the Kryptonite to see how she was treating her friend. On the other hand, Lena was being awfully chatty about how she felt about Supergirl. I can’t help but wonder if she was saying those things to get a confession out of Kara. It’s like she did to Same when she was trying to get her to shift into Reign. She was manipulating her emotions by saying hurtful things to get the truth. That’s something you definitely shouldn’t do. As I’ve said before, there’s no way the two are still going to be friends at the end of the season.
