How That ‘Deadpool’/Celine Dion Mashup Happened

Deadpool 2 had it’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles Monday evening, and many of the cast and crew who worked on the film stepped out to answer all the questions about the film, Deadpool 3 and more.

One of the greatest promotional videos ever created, happened to drop during the campaign leading up to Deadpool 2. It was, of course, the Deadpool/Celine Dion mashup that filled a hole in our hearts we didn’t know we needed filled.

It features the singer in one of her breathtaking gowns, singing her heart out on stage to the gorgeous single, Ashes, while Deadpool struts his stuff in high heels to the dramatic power ballad. Deadpool yells to her at the end, saying it was too good, and that she needs to “sing worse”.

Celine Dion may have the voice of a super star, and she may have had the career dreams are made of, but she is also known for her self deprecating sense of humor. We can guess that she was thrilled to collaborate with Ryan.

Deadpool 2 director, David Leitch, explained to Variety how it actually came to be. Of course, it was Ryan Reynolds who caught her attention.

Ryan took up the mantle. I think it was celebrity-to-celebrity. He wrote her a nice impassioned letter. And she responded quickly. We were all like little girls, like “Oh my God she’s gonna do it! She’s gonna do it!’ it was very exciting. But, there’s not other person that we could think of that really fits the DNA of Deadpool. She’s an iconic singer, incredible voice, but she also kind of fits in our world. And wow, what a great sense of humor and what a professional. It was such a fun time shooting that video. It was one of my favorite experiences on set, and I’ve been doing movies for 20 years. So, that was surreal.

Celine Dion has three sons-which means she definitely won even more cool mom points for this. One of which, René-Charles Angelil, just began his own career as a rapper.

Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18th, and if you haven’t seen the glorious Deadpool/Celine Dion collaboration that is Ashes, click here!
