Joe Russo on that Pivotal ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Moment
If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, we’d recommend not reading any further.
Avengers: Infinity War broke box office records-major ones. It brought audiences around the world to tears-the ugly crying kind. It allowed us to see both imperfect and incredibly powerful versions of our favorite heroes. The deaths in the film are real and permanent.
That doesn’t stop fans from wondering what ‘death’ means in that equation. There were the heroes who lost their lives inside of Thanos’ snap, and the ones who lost them outside of it.
While it was sad to watch all of them happen, an idea exists that they’re not all gone forever. We will say this, if they ARE truly obsolete now, this film won’t just be a culmination of 10 years, but a game changer in the comic book realm as we know it.
There’s not much Joe Russo can say about the movie, or about Avengers 4 yet; but he did touch on a moment between Gamora and Thanos after her death that made us feel like our questions about the finite deaths are valid.
While visiting his alma mater, Russo had this to say about that incredibly important scene with Gamora and Thanos.
Yeah it’s- it’s implied it’s the soul stone. It’s all orange around, then he’s inside the soul stone with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers- he has this out of body experience with Thanos. When he goes inside the Soul Stone, he has this kind of, conversation, with the younger version of his Gamora.
He was then asked, to make sure fans were on the same page, if Gamora was truly ‘inside’ of the soul stone.
She’s in fact, yes. It was an attempt, an attempt on our part- because we don’t like two-dimensional roles or three-dimensional villains. Every villain is a hero in their own story, and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is, he’s a more complex villain if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care about things, and it is complicated for him to execute his plan, and it cost him something. He said at the end “It cost him everything”, and that it was the only thing he loved, which was Gamora. Which is why we put him back with her at the end. I just want to reiterate with the audience, that he does feel true emotion even though he is a monster.
This confirmation means everything to fans who have been speculating that Thanos met Gamora, in that incredibly important scene, in the soul world.
It also opens up the idea that hope for her isn’t lost just yet. While it’s not a fate we want to see come for the hero, maybe Tony Stark’s role in all of this will be the ultimate sacrifice.
Maybe that will be what makes the difference.
We’re holding out for a way that allows him to walk off into the sunset yet still brings back some of the heroes we lost. Color us optimistic, but we’ve got our reasons.
Also, we just can’t go through another scene where we have to see the life slip away from him. It’s too much.
