Bruce Campbell Bids a “Heartfelt Farewell” to Playing Ash Williams

Late last week, Starz made the heartbreaking announcement that the fan-favorite series Ash vs. Evil Dead would be coming to an end. The series will be wrapping up its third and now the final season on Saturday, April 29th.

What seems like just another canceled television show actually holds a far deeper meaning in pop culture history. Not only is the series ending but star Bruce Campbell has announced his retirement from playing the beloved Ash Williams – a character he played for 39 years.

In an emotional post on Facebook Monday night, Campbell took the time to acknowledge that it’s time for him to move on from the character. He wrote:

“Good people, Evil Dead fans everywhere, I bid you a heartfelt farewell playing Ash – the character I took acting lessons with for 39 years.

I am hereby retiring from that portrayal. It’s time. I followed Ash from his formative years thru his mid-life crisis and decline. What a thrill! What a privilege!

We had a great resurgence with the help of Starz (kudos not jeers, folks). They made it possible for 15 more hours of Evil Dead-ness in your life – the equivalent of 10 more features!

Is Ash dead? Never. Ash is as much a concept as a person. Where there is evil in this world, there must be one to counter – man or woman, it matters not.

Thanks for watching.

Love,

Bruce”

Similarly, on Twitter, Campbell thanked fans who had started a petition hoping to rehome the canceled series to Netflix. To that, Campbell simply said, “Big props to fans for the effort, but I’m retired as Ash. #timetofrysomeotherfish”

The series finale of Ash vs. Evil Dead will air on April 29th. After that, who knows but we can’t wait to see what Bruce Campbell will do next!
