Supergirl Recap ‘Schott Through the Heart’

Supergirl returns after a long hiatus to find the team enjoying a night out and singing some karaoke. However, things take a turn for the worse when they see a news report that Winn’s father, Toyman, is dead. At the funeral, Winn’s mother, Mary, shows up and tries to reconnect with her son. Before they can say anything to each other, Toyman’s coffin explodes. Back at the DEO, she apologizes to Winn for leaving him, saying that the reason she had to was because his father threatened his life. There was nothing she could do. The DEO is then attacked by flying monkeys, but they’re pretty easy to take out with Kara and James on the offensive. Afterward, Winn and Mary work together to figure out who is targeting them and eventually subdue the copycat.

Alex, J’onn, and M’rynn have a nice meal together, but things go south when M’rynn starts showing signs of memory loss. J’onn isn’t in the room when this happens and Alex begs M’rynn to tell his son. Naturally, he doesn’t want to and gets upset with Alex. He eventually starts getting more aggressive with her, telling her to leave. Later, J’onn asks Alex what happened and she tells him to talk to M’yrnn because she doesn’t want to be the one to deliver the news. When father and son do finally talk it out, J’onn says he’s going to do everything in his power to help him.

Before Supergirl went on hiatus, Imra came to Mon-El and said she needed to tell them truth about why they were really there. She was apparently keeping things hidden from him with the help of Brainiac-5 and this really hurts Mon-El. Because of this, he finally sees how terrible he was to Kara in keeping his true past a secret from her. He apologizes for all the lies he’s told, and Kara appreciates his apology. Later, he tells her that the third Worldkiller, Pestilence, eventually turns into Blight, who ravages the future. Now that they share a common goal, he says that the Legion can help Supergirl.

After a conversation with Mon-El about “figuring things out” with life and people, James wants to move forward with his relationship with Lena. He spends all episode calling and just getting her voicemail. According to Lena’s secretary, it’s been days since she’s seen her as well. In the final moments of the episode, Lena finally calls James back, apologizing for not answering her phone. She lies to him, saying that she and Sam have been locked in a conference room working on L Corp stuff. I’m pretty sure James knows that she’s lying too since he’s been in contact with Lena’s secretary. What has Lena really been doing though? She has Sam sedated in some medical facility and is running tests to figure out what is causing all the blackouts. Will Lena be the first one to figure out Sam’s secret?

There wasn’t much in this episode that progressed the Worldkiller story line, but it was nice to have an episode devoted to Winn, which is something that we haven’t really had since the first season. When it was revealed that his father was the Toyman, people have wondered if he would ever follow in his father’s footsteps and become evil. I think we saw in this episode that that will probably never happen. At one point during the final battle, Winn did make a comment about connecting to that part of him that was like his father, but he was able to control it and just knock out the copycat Toyman. Mary even commented on the goodness inside her son despite everything he experienced growing up.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘In Search of Lost Time.’
