After Katie (Katy Mixon) and Anna-Kat (Julia Butters) must walk home 10 miles or aka 3 blocks after running out of gas because Taylor (Meg Donnelly) borrowed the family car and forgot to fill up the gas tank Katie is less than happy. When Taylor points out that she doesn’t have money to fill up the gas tank, Katie tells her that maybe she needed to find a job, so she can afford to pay for gas and to buy tickets to a concert she and her boyfriend were planning to go to. Taking her mother’s advice, she gets a waitress job at her mother’s morning getaway restaurant where she, Angela (Carly Hughes) and Doris (Ali Wong) all have their “Second Breakfast” meetings. Katie soon finds her privacy, relaxation and “Me Time” invaded and decides that maybe this “Taylor getting a job” idea was not one of her best.

While she is also on her mother knows best roll, Katie decides that Anna-Kat needs to find other friends besides her best friend Franklin (Evan O’Toole). Franklin seems to be the weirdest kid Anna-Kat’s grade and Katie is worried that if she does not make other friends then Anna-Kat will be considered just as weird. So, Katie tries adding new kids to the carpool and even manages to get Franklin removed from her carpool when she accidentally forgot to pick him up. She soon realizes what a mistake she has made when Anna-Kat seems to have lost her best friend.

Meanwhile, Greg (Diedrich Bader) is trying to help Oliver (Daniel DiMaggio) with his research paper. Trying to convince Oliver that recycling is the best way to help the environment but when Oliver decides to write the paper on why “Recycling is a Scam”. Greg cannot believe that his own son would think that much less write his paper about it. After all, Greg is on the recycling board with three janitors. Greg even pay’s his teacher a visit when she gives Oliver an A with the promise of a $7 Starbucks gift card if she lowers his grade.

The Otto parents soon realize they that maybe they do not always know what is best for their kids. The parents must suck up their pride and apologize. Greg throws away a bottle without recycling, Katie allows Taylor to go to a concert and agrees to help her find a different job when she gets back. Katie then invites Franklin back into the Otto household, carpool and their hearts.

I know as a mom to three children (Four if you count my husband) that sometimes admitting that you do not always know what is best for your children is the hardest part of being a mother. Of course, in my case, you throw in there being a southern mom and it is darn near impossible. So, you have to just sit on the porch, watch them stumble out into the road and pray to the good Lord that you gave them enough common sense to get the heck out of the way of oncoming traffic. That is what Katie and Greg had to do this week and the Otto children did not let them down.
