What I Love Wednesday: Emily Kinney’s Music

Welcome back to What I Love Wednesdays! This Wednesday I’m going to discuss why I love Emily Kinney and her music. We all know and love Emily Kinney as The Walking Dead’s Beth Greene, but another reason to love her is for her music.

The Walking Dead

I know I said I was going to focus on music, but her character in The Walking Dead is one of my favorites. Kinney first entered into TWD universe in season 2 and she immediately won me over. Beth grew from a scared little girl to someone who could fend for herself. She sang a few times on the show, probably the most notable is when she sang The Parting Glass with her onscreen sister, Lauren Cohan. I love the song, it brings hope when the group needs it most.

Expired Love and Rockstar

I honestly didn’t know Kinney sang until I went to my first Walker Stalker Con. I had the pleasure of meeting her and hearing her sing. She sang through this whole album and introduced us to some new stuff (Rockstar) that she was working on. She explained the songs and told stories and took selfies with us.

“‘Expired Love’ is about my story. But I do think that with my acting career, my style seeps into my career a lot. My songs are similar to Tom Waits‘ in that they’re little stories. Sometimes I write songs based on one word or feeling that keeps popping up for me. And I do feel like because I’ve never played a character for so long, that it can’t help but seep its way into things. It’s like, maybe this is why a particular idea keeps coming up for me because this is something that we keep dealing with on the show!”-Kinney

This concert introduced me to her music and I’m grateful for it.

Mermaid Song and The Sweetheart Deal

This past October, Kinney released her newest single, Mermaid Song. I have listened to it probably close to a thousand times.

As I said in my article about its release, “The song has an eerieness to it that reminds you of the ocean and how big and open it is while being empty and lonely all at the same time. The synthetic sound and lyrics find a way to wrap all the anxieties and feelings one can feel. Overall the song gives a sense of suffocation.”

Kinney’s new band is called The Sweetheart Deal and she formed it with her sweetheart singer/songwriter Paul McDonald. The band has a romantic folk vibe to it. I have listened to their music on their Instagram and Facebook and it’s magical. One of these days I’m going to have to attend one of their concerts. The streaming is phenomenal, but I’m sure it doesn’t do the live show justice.

Emily Kinney is an amazing singer/songwriter and I’m grateful for having the opportunity to listen to her work and I’m looking forward to what she does next.
