Jeff Goldblum Talks Shirtless Malcolm and ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’

Jeff Goldblum Talks Shirtless Malcolm and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Jeff Goldblum addressed a packed house last Saturday in Dallas where he talked about his past and current roles, including Isle of Dogs, Thor: Ragnarok, The Mountain, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The moderator of the panel hailed Goldblum as one of the busiest men in show business, and Goldblum had to agree. On top of all the publicity tours, Goldblum still manages to find time to be with his wife and two kids while also playing piano for a jazz group every Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Despite all that he has on his plate, Goldblum considers himself to be very lucky.

“I was thrilled about the idea of being an actor when I was a kid. I was just obsessed with the idea of doing it. And the idea that I’ve done it now over the past few decades, and worked with interesting people, and gotten interesting parts to play, it is still an unimaginable and delicious thing for me. I’m very, very grateful.”

Goldblum was just finished doing a press tour for the home video release of Thor: Ragnarok, and he said that filming the movie was a very fun experience. He praised Taika Waititi for his adventurous and brilliant directing, saying that he loves to have fun and they did a lot of fooling around on set. For every line filmed, they would also do ten other takes just goofing off and seeing what worked. Goldblum added that a lot of that is what made it into the film.

In the past couple of years, Goldblum has had to reprise roles from years ago, including Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park and David Levinson in Independence Day. When asked how it was jumping back into the characters, he said that it was very easy.  Regarding Malcolm, Goldblum said that it was simple because he loves that character. He enjoys talking about the value of science and the dangers of exploiting animals for scientific gain or cheap entertainment. These things are “very bad.”

Malcolm makes his return to the Jurassic Park franchise in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. In the past couple of years, the internet has been plagued by the image of Malcolm lying on a table with his shirt almost completely unbuttoned. There’s even a Funko Pop of Malcolm in that pose, which Goldblum said he loves. This all leads to the ever important question of if we will be seeing a shirtless Malcolm in Fallen Kingdom.

“I don’t wanna give anything away… I may stay clothed… I have a scene in a Senatorial hearing, and it would be inappropriate for me to disrobe. But in my trailer, I took my shirt off a lot.”

In addition to the upcoming film, there’s a video game coming out, Jurassic World Evolution, where the player can build their own park. Malcolm makes in appearance in the video game as a voice of guidance and warning. Goldblum laughs, “You know, personal experience bits of wisdom.”

In his career, Goldblum has played a number of different characters from all walks of life. When asked what attracts him to a role, Goldblum first thanked his manager of 30 years for helping him choose wisely. He added that he is interested in a number of different things, so movies that deal with different aspects of life are always appealing to him.

“I go with my instinct. Just what feels fun for me to play with. What feels like I might expand my ability to pretend with… I like having a variety.”

Isle of Dogs is in theaters now, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom set to arrive June 22, 2018.
