The Russo Brothers on Iron Man’s ‘Infinity War’ Journey

As fans of the MCU we all know that Avengers: Infinity War brings it some incredibly high stakes. There are actors we love who have fulfilled their contracts with Marvel Studios as of Avengers 4. There are some who still have a number of films left, but that doesn’t exactly mean they’re safe from Thanos’ evil.

One hero we know has made a lasting impact on the MCU, as well as the other heroes, is Iron Man. While we weren’t exactly ‘Team Iron Man’ while watching Civil War, we understood his perspective and felt his pain.

He did what he thought was right for the Avengers. At one point he looks at Cap and says ‘You’re coming with us…because it’s us.’

We might have shed a tear there. Not just for Iron Man but got Tony Stark, the man behind the hero. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place and there was a moment of total vulnerability. In fact, there were a few moments between Tony and Steve that really gave us a look at what they had to lose.

Both personas of Tony are going to play a big role in Infinity War. Anthony and Joe Russo recently talked about the depth of that.

While they also discussed that a major part of Tony Stark’s journey in Infinity War is his connection to Thanos, there’s so much more at stake for him.

‘Downey is such a remarkable performer, and we really love him as a performer and what he’s done with the character. The character started as a very narcissistic, self-centered character. His arc in the first movie was to just begin to take a step beyond that, and we’ve continued him along that line in his journey that he’s had to the point where at the opening of Infinity War, his personal life is very thick. The stakes of his relationship with Pepper (Potts) are very high now. Also the fact that he’s had this mentor relationship with Peter Parker, it’s as if his personal life is becoming fuller and more important to him than it ever had before. And that’s an interesting counterpoint to his life as Iron Man, and also his life as Iron Man is a potential threat to that personal life as well. What’s happening with Tony Stark in this film is that he’s beginning to feel the tension between those two things, and that’s a difficult conflict for him.’

The tension between his two personas could go one of two ways for Tony in the film. He could realize how important it is for him to be at the top of his game as Iron Man so he can get back to what’s important in his personal life. Which would in turn lead to the most fierce version of Iron Man so far.

However, it could also serve as a weakness, trying to find a balance. Blurred lines between Iron Man and his life as Tony could leave him more vulnerable than ever before.

Fans will see what happens next when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
