Featuring brand new music and lyrics by the 2018 Jonathan Larson Grant winner Zoe Sarnak, producer Bill Weiner is heading up the project and will be working with Carol Heikkinen, the film’s original writer. Weiner said in a statement:

[row]“I am beyond thrilled to bring this iconic film to the Broadway stage. As a film, Empire Records captured the hearts of millions of Americans, and I am so excited for Carol’s words and vision to be brought together with Zoe’s incredible music and lyrics. They both have such a passion for the story and its time.”[/row]

In the original film, a group of misfit record store employees works together to prevent the store from closing and to turn into the chain store, Music City. The Empire Records staff (which includes characters played by Anthony LaPaglia, Ethan Embry, Renee Zellweger, and Liv Tyler), desperately tries to save the store by pulling off a massive party/fundraiser. “Empire Records, Open until Midnight!”

Empire Records‘ Broadway debut is targeted for 2020 to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary.
