Steven Spielberg Says He’s Open to Making Indiana Jones a Woman

Speculation is looming that the upcoming fifth installment of Indiana Jones might be Harrison Ford’s last hurrah as the iconic character.  If that’s the case, director Steven Spielberg has confirmed that he’s not opposed to the idea of taking a completely new approach to further the film franchise.

In a recent interview with The Sun, Spielberg revealed that he thinks it’s time the famous archeologist turned adventurer be portrayed as a woman.  He has previously said the character could take on a “different form,” in future films but, when asked directly if that meant that Indiana Jones could be female, Spielberg replied:

Spielberg commented further alluding to the fact that the next installment of the franchise, which is set to begin filming in April of 2019, will most likely be Harrison Ford’s last film as Indiana Jones.  With the end of an era upon us, Spielberg is still confident that the franchise will continue past this fifth installment.

He admits that a female Indy might upset some fans but, being an active supporter of the recent #MeToo and Times’s Up movements, Spielberg says he has always been influenced by strong women.  He said, “My mom was strong. She had a voice, she had a very strong opinion.I have been very lucky to be influenced by women, several of whom I have just loved madly — my mom and my wife.”
