Joe Russo on Doctor Strange’s ‘Personal’ Stake in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

While every character in Avengers: Infinity War is going to be present in the war against Thanos, some will experience it in a more personal way than others. We know that for Vision and Doctor Strange – the stones are kept on their person. The Time Stone is around Strange’s neck and the Mind Stone is literally in Vision’s forehead.

We already know that Steve Rogers takes some of the Avengers, including War Machine, to Wakanda to protect Vision. It’s a country full of warriors, more high tech than any other place in the world, and it’s where the biggest chance of defeating Thanos lies. At least, that’s what we’re hoping.

We know little about where Thanos finds Doctor Strange, but with his Infinity Stone, this fight is going to be very real for him. Joe Russo spoke with comicbook.com about the film and what this fight means for Doctor Strange.

‘Doctor Strange, like a lot of the other characters, will integrate his universe into this film, and he will have a very personal stake in it because he’s a bearer of an Infinity Stone. So clearly, Thanos is coming for the stones, he’s going to run into Doctor Strange.’

Russo went on to say that this is an incredibly unique film.

‘There’s a lot of characters in these movies that have tones that they’re bringing from their own franchises. I think it’s a very unique film. I don’t think there are a lot of movies that have the kind of tone that this movie has, because it’s a combination of franchises. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that before, on this scale. It’s got a really unique tone to it. I think it’s propulsive. I would say it’s an adventure film, but it has elements of a… We were inspired by 90s crime films when we were working on the script, so it’s got an energy to it, a bit of a smash-and-grab energy.’

When the trailer was released this morning we saw Doctor Strange in a very painful looking predicament with Ebony Maw. He is capable of mind control and it has led some fans to wonder if he’s going to turn Doctor Strange into a traitor.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but the wait won’t be long. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
