Chadwick Boseman on Trust Between Black Panther and Captain America
In just a few weeks, fans of the MCU will be pouring into theaters around the world to see Avengers: Infinity War. The film is a culmination of everything from Marvel Studios so far. It goes without saying that it’s going to be emotional, but it won’t all be heartwrenching.
Some of the relationships we’ve seen grow over the years have been tested, but with Thanos and his evil looming, the Avengers are forced to set aside their differences. While we haven’t seen this in full yet, we did begin to see it as Captain America: Civil War came to a close.
T’Challa realized that the mission for revenge was ruining everyone around him. He said he was done letting the emotion control him. So at the end of the movie, it was nice to see him take in Captain America and Bucky Barnes. Especially because the fight between the two of them and Iron Man broke all of us a little bit.
Chadwick Boseman spoke with EW about Black Panther’s relationship with Cap and how it grows in a pretty special way in Avengers: Infinity War.
‘They trust each other. His shield was already made from vibranium anyway. So it’s just an extension of what he already had. This time, actually giving it to him, as opposed to…Me actually giving it to him is a testament to our relationship and trust.’
Of course, the new shield he spoke of was created by Shuri, T’Challa’s sister. As he said, the claw shields were created for Cap, not made of likely…stolen vibranium. It’s a huge symbol of the way their relationship has come to stand for something.
It’s forgiveness and compassion and the ability to look past one’s flaws all rolled into one. Captain America and Black Panther were at odds over Bucky during most of the film, until T’Challa was able to separate himself from the equation and look at what was happening around him. Cap saw this in his own way too, but more when he saw what happened after the Avengers ‘fell.’
We hope to see that notion of forgiveness touch the relationship of others, too. We’re looking at you Tony and Steve.
