Liv gets a taste of a hopeless romantic and becomes a believer in love on this week’s fun and entertaining iZombie.
This week’s brain comes from a young hopeless romantic who seemingly wanted to get into New Seattle, meeting her end courtesy of the coyote she paid to get her in. Thanks to the brain, we are treated to a lovestruck Liv that taps into some of my favorite aspects of romantic comedies.
We were treated to the heroine’s voiceovers and on-point musical cues that brought back memories of early 2000’s rom-coms that just added to the story as Liv was determined to find her “soulmate”—her Mark Darcy, not Daniel Cleaver.
The diversion the investigation takes offers one of the highlights of the episode as Liv talks Peyton into going to human-zombie night at the Scratching Post. In turn, Peyton drags Ravi into the whole situation which leads to a fun “makeover” montage as they find the right outfit for Ravi, with the best fit of a song for such a scene.
It was fun seeing Liv, Ravi, and Peyton out on the town and dealing with Liv’s lovestruck brain throughout the night. Ravi and Peyton’s reactions to Liv making out with Tim was hilarious. The trio’s night out mixed with the brain of the week led Liv to ask Peyton questions about her and Ravi. If that lingering look at the man in question as he was showing off his moves (including the water sprinkler) is any indication, there might be something there still.
But it wasn’t all fun and games as Liv spotted Dale at the Scratching Post flirting with someone who was decidedly not Clive and leaving with him. The question is, why was she there and does this mean that their relationship is on the rocks or is there more that we don’t know quite yet?
Elsewhere in New Seattle, Chase, Major, and Fillmore-Graves are dealing with the more grounded aspects of this new world they live in with a connection to the Coyote that Ravi and Liv met while smuggling the suspect’s son out of the city last episode, Renegade.
The pressure is on Chase to balance the brain shortage with the zombie smuggling into the city and his desperation to track Renegade down using his dynamic with Blaine. With the promise of being left alone, Blaine is quick to accept Chase’s offer of digging up dirt and figuring out who this Renegade person is.
Of course, Blaine takes the task the only way Blaine can—with a bit of sinister charm that leads to a trade off with a brain supplier and an unsuspecting new zombie. Unfortunately for the newly-minted zombie, Blaine doesn’t appreciate his sense of loyalty to the person who smuggled him into the city. The confrontation leads to Blaine showing off the 16 remaining vials of the zombie cure that were taken from the coroner, ending with the new zombie, potentially un-zombified, and dead-dead.
The first hour of the two-part story was fun, entertaining and just what we’ve come to appreciate about iZombie. Now to see how they’ll catch Annie’s killer, deal with Blaine’s inevitable involvement and hunt for Renegade, and of course that whole situation with Dale and Clive.
What did you think of “Brainless in Seattle, Part 1”? How fun were those rom-com bits throughout the hour?
iZombie airs Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.
