Fox Wants a ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival with Joss Whedon

Could a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival be hitting our televisions in the not too distant future?  As it turns out, it’s a greater possibility than you might think!

In speaking with Variety during the INTV Conference in Jerusalem this week, Fox TV group chair Gary Newman said that a Buffy reboot is a frequent hot topic of conversation. He said:

“I think if you look in our library, ‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back.”

That that most likely comes as no surprise to fans of the series. Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from 1997 through 2003 and earned a huge fan following during its time. Newman says that if there was to be a series which the network would revive, Buffy would probably be that series. He continued by saying:

“It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with.  When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”

In addition to having Whedon onboard, Newton says that in order for a revival to be successful, it needs to be more than just a marketing ploy. He believes that there needs to be a strong want from the fandom first.  He explains:

“I think more than anything it’s a marketing opportunity.  People are aware of the show, you don’t have to build awareness. If the show’s beloved, you get a great deal of intent to view right from the get-go.”

It certainly sounds like Newton is hoping to revive the series at a time that’s right and when everyone is ready.  While we all wait with bated breath for Joss Whedon to be ready to return to Sunnydale, do you think there’s enough fan support for a Buffy reboot?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
