‘Gotham’: ‘A Dark Knight: A Beautiful Darkness’ Recap

Hello, fellow Gothamites, we left off last week with Bruce losing himself into all the parties and champagne. Edward Nygma his second personality, the Riddler coming out to play and wanting kill Lee. Oh, let’s not forget about Ivy and Selina teaming up to make ‘Gotham their b*tch.’

This week’s episode starts right where it left off, and we see Ivy with a reluctant Selina behind her knocking on a door. Ivy soon uses her scent on the lady that opens the door which lets them enter the house without any trouble of the woman. Before the family realizes that they don’t know the pair, they are under Ivy’s spell. Ivy freezes their movement, and Seline goes out of the room to steal some more stuff around the house. But it wasn’t about that. No, for Ivy this was all about the husband, Roland Charles. It’s all about him torturing plants in the name of science. It’s a big No-No for Ivy, and of course, she wants to take revenge.

Ivy learns about ‘Project M,’ and she wants to know everything about it. Bruce Wayne is the one to approve all the projects in his company. Guess where Ivy will go next? Bingo, Bruce Wayne’s mansion. Selina doesn’t want anything to do with Ivy and leaves her alone.

Once that scene is over, Ivy heads over to Wayne mansion to meet up with Bruce. He finds him there with a talking parrot and his head on the couch. Bruce takes a good look at Ivy, and he remembers her from the night before in The Sirens Club. When Ivy got asked what she’s doing there, she talks right about business and says she wants to speak up for those who can’t, the plants. The young Wayne deals with a severe headache and asks Ivy to leave him alone. Ivy, of course, doesn’t take that as her cue to go and asks about ‘Project M.’ Bruce is shocked and immediately asks how she knows about the mysterious project.

“I know a lot of things… Billionaire boy.” “Ivy?”

After that Ivy kisses Bruce and of course, he is immediately under her spell, spilling everything on ‘Project M.’ Even though we don’t get to know what it is yet, Ivy doesn’t seem to spare Bruce and scratches him in the neck, just like he did for Roland. Only, it seems to have a slower effect, and Bruce is hallucinating.

The second part of the hallucination brings him in his dad’s study, where many people dance, walk and talk. Bruce sees Jim Gordon and asks for help. Right next to Bruce, there is Barbara Kean, and they both laugh when Bruce says who he is. Up next he sees Lee Thompkins and Penguin around the other him, making jokes and laughing out loud.

The third hallucination Bruce gets is that he gets caught by Special Agent Alfred Pennyworth and he is on a mission. A mission to bring Bruce to the one and only caped crusader. He ends up in the alley where his parents got killed and walked further into the hallucination.

“Why did you bring me here? This is where my parents were killed!” “No, this is where I was born.”

Bruce has a look into his future. The caped hero then jumps right on top of him. After that Bruce wakes up in a wet underground cave (Batman Begins reference). Bruce is then woken up with the antidote by Jim and Lucius.

This episode also dived in Arkham Asylum, and it showed Penguin, with an annoyed look on his face, while getting food. While he sits down alone at a table, someone throws a Joker card onto his shoulder. The one and only Jerome Valeska ask if he can sit in that seat. Jerome then sits down and says he was always a fan and he expected great things of the Penguin when he got locked up in Arkham Asylum.

In the evening Penguin gets a visitor, the Riddler himself, Edward Nygma. He laughs out loud when he sees Penguin in a bruised state. Once he sees how awful he looks, Edward goes on how he is so happy and how he has friends. Penguin then said he’s going to get out soon and he will wipe Nygma out of existence. Nygma then goes on to tell him he won’t be able to do it because he has no friends to help him escape. Red flags should already be there as it’s an ideal moment to team up with Jerome and his gang in Arkham. Nygma walks out of the room and leaves an origami paper on the table with a riddle. He’s back!

The end of this episode shows an Ivy in a lab, working with the Lazarus pit water. It reminds me of the scene at the beginning of Batman & Robin.

All in all, this was a great episode. It was a lot of fun to delve more into the details of the episode. So many reunions, so many references. It’s already one fantastic season!
