Throwback Thursday: ‘The Wedding Singer’ (1998)

Yesterday was Valentine’s day, and we hope that everyone was able to celebrate with a special someone, family, or friends. For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we chose The Wedding Singer which was released 20 years ago in 1998. The film came out on February 13th and starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Their partnership grew into one of the best rom-com pairs we adore.

The movie centers around a wedding singer, Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler), who meets a waitress, Julia Sullivan (Drew Barrymore) at a wedding event. Both characters are engaged to other people, however, as with all rom-com stories, there is a definite spark that develops between them.

Robbie becomes heartbroken when his fiancé ends their relationship, and it sets him on a downward spiral.

Thankfully, his new friend, Julia, is there to help and he naturally falls for her. However, it takes a little more time for her to realize that her soon-to-be husband is not the best fit for her. Deep down she does fall for Robbie but is determined to make her relationship with Glenn Guglia (Matthew Glave) work.

The film is filled with 80’s nostalgia, a great supporting cast, and ends with an adorable romantic gesture. With the help of flight attendants and passengers like Billy Idol, Robbie proves his love by singing “Grow Old With You” to win over Julia. Glenn had no chance!

Sandler and Barrymore went on to collaborate on two subsequent romantic comedies, 50 First Dates (2004) and Blended (2014), proving they continue to have some fantastic chemistry!
