Sebastian Stan on Rediscovering Bucky Barnes
It’s impossible to imagine the MCU without Sebastian Stan for many reasons. One, of course, is that he plays the difficult but important role of Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier. Both personas have an indescribable depth to them while one is light and the other brings darkness.
It’s a lot to juggle, and regardless of which role he takes on, the slightest glimmer of the other is always evident. With a role like that comes the need for an extreme amount of dedication and patience, both of which Sebastian exudes on and off screen.
When a fan asked him what he liked best about playing Bucky, his response made the crowd at Wizard World quite happy. It’s something we really enjoy too.
‘I’ve been enjoying rediscovering him in the last few movies, including Infinity War because he started out a certain way and then it was such a hard left with the Winter Soldier, it was immediately like a whole different ballgame. So now it’s been fun going back a little bit and finding different things that we discovered in that early movie and putting them back in little by little. Finding out where is he know, ya know? I like that he’s always slightly unhinged, ya know and keeping everybody around him on edge.‘
Unhinged is a pretty decent want to describe Bucky, but there’s constantly a part of him that stays grounded. As Sebastian went on to say, there’s a lot about the Winter Soldier that we don’t know which also means there’s quite a bit about Bucky (now) that we don’t know either. Hopefully one day we’ll get a glimpse into everything that transpired before we saw him as the Winter Soldier that we know. There’s so much depth there.
