The 2018 Oscar Nominations Are Here!

The 2018 Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning, and as usual, they were full of surprises. Despite being completely snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTA, The Post managed to pull out a Best Picture nom and Best Actress nomination for Streep, bringing her career total to 21. We guess that Streep is just a name that is too hard to resist for voters. The Shape Of Water leads the pack with a total of 13 nominations, followed by Dunkirk with 8 and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with 7.

It comes as no surprise that James Franco was snubbed for his role in The Disaster Artist. Despite being a frontrunner early on, the recent sexual misconduct allegations against him became public right around the time of voting. However, his absence led to a lovely surprise of Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya and Daniel Day-Lewis who is planning to retire after Phantom Thread. Christopher Plummer pulled out the nomination for All the Money in the World, which was a role that was surrounded by controversy after Kevin Spacey was fired.

I, Tonya was snubbed from Best Picture but Janney and Robbie both received nominations. We also thought that Armie Hammer was a lock in for his supporting role in Call Me By Your Name, but he was snubbed despite Chalamet receiving a nom and the film itself being nominated for Best Picture.  Over in the directing category, we were ecstatic to see both Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) receive nominations. Phantom Thread‘s Paul Thomas Anderson snuck in there as well.
