Oprah Earns Standing Ovations During Her Stirring Cecil B. DeMille Award Acceptance Speech at The Golden Globes

Oprah Winfrey made history at the 75th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night. when she became the first black woman to be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award since its inception in 1952.

Before bringing Oprah up to the stage to accept her award, friend and A Wrinkle in Time costar Reese Witherspoon lovingly introduced a highlight reel of Oprah’s career.  The reel displayed all that she has accomplished as an actress and as a humanitarian and showed the positive impact she has made on the lives of so many people around the world.  In addition to her iconic performances in films such as The Color Purple and Beloved, her talk show ran for 25 years.  She runs her own television network and, also, her own production company.  Truly, there was no one else more deserving of this honor than Oprah Winfrey.

When Oprah took to the stage, she proceeded to deliver an acceptance speech which will go down in history as one of the top award show moments of all time.  On a night which was filled with women’s empowerment, calls for equality and solidarity in the wake of the “Time’s Up” movement, Oprah delivered a pertinent and gracious 8-minute message of hope and change.

“I want all the girls watching to know a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure they are the leaders to take us to the time where nobody has to say ‘me too’ again,” Winfrey said closing out her speech to a thunderous applause and one of three standing ovations she received during her time on the stage.
