One of the most-anticipated moments in Doctor Who history has finally happened! Jodie Whittaker has made history by officially regenerating as the 13th Doctor on the BBC hit series. The iconic introduction took place during the one-hour Christmas day special Twice Upon a Time in which the 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi exited the series.
Whittaker is the first female to play the role of the beloved Time Lord and her debut on screen was the culmination of an emotional farewell. BBC has released the 5-minute scene in which the regeneration takes place. Check out the footage below:
It was announced back in July of this year that Whittaker would be taking over for Capaldi who has been playing the role since 2013. The announcement drew controversy and criticism from some but, on the whole, created positive buzz and support from fans and castmates (both past and present).
Former series star John Barrowman (who played Captain Jack Harkness) weighed in during Heroes and Villain Fan Fest New Jersey earlier this year saying:
“It’s a bit about time that we had a girl doctor… I think it’s awesome that she’s going to be a girl and I think it’s great that she’s good looking and I would love for Captain Jack to meet the Doctor.”
Likewise, Peter Capaldi shouted his support from the rooftop of Madison Square Garden during New York Comic Con in October. He praised Whittaker during his Doctor Who Panel by saying, “She’s amazing. I’ve seen what she’s done and you’re in good hands.”

Fans hoping to see more of Whittaker as she takes on the role of the 13th Doctor will unfortunately have to wait. The series isn’t expected to return until late in 2018.
