Disney Casts its Live-Action Mulan
Disney chose its star for the upcoming live-action Mulan. Liu Yifei or Crystal Liu will lead the cast as the fighting and spirited Disney princess, Variety reports.
Chinese actress Liu steps into the role after Disney held a year long search for the perfect fit.
Casting for the part was a significantly big undertaking. A casting team searched five continents and auditioned almost 1000 eligible ladies. By eligible, we mean an ethnically Chinese girl with the right martial arts skills, proficiency in English and perfect for the role.
She is well known to the Chinese for her pure innocent image and has been nicknamed “Fairy Sister.” She first broke onto the acting scene in the early 2000s.
Other facts about Liu? She lived in Queens, New York for a time, and acted alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in 2008’s The Forbidden Kingdom as well as in Outcast starring Nicholas Cage and Hayden Christensen. And that’s only the beginning. She’s been brand ambassador for Dior and several other popular beauty companies and is signed with WME.
Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife) will direct The live-action Mulan which is a remake of the 1998 animated classic starring the voice of Agent’s of Sheild’s Ming Na Wen. The film’s producers are hoping for a release in 2019.
