Legends of Tomorrow Recap ‘Welcome to the Jungle’

With Sara still in a medically-induced coma, the Legends are one their own this week in determining what anachronism to handle. Jax just points at a random one and they are off to the jungles of Vietnam during the war, despite the anachronism being ranked an eight. Jax and Stein stay on the ship while the others try to find a lead on this monster that soldiers are seeing in the jungle. Mick and Nate pose as officers and trek into the jungle while Ray, Amaya, and Zari take on the role of journalists. They are led by a woman named Anh to a settlement where they meet the monster, and it’s Gorilla Grodd. They can’t get word to the rest of the team because the civilians have jammed all signals.

In the jungle, Nate and Mick are confronted by American soldiers, who just so happen to be under the command of Mick’s father, Dick. Mick didn’t want to go on this mission because he didn’t want to run into his good-for-nothing father, but now they’re forced to work together. Some soldiers appear out of the jungle, and they were a part of the missing platoon, but they are under Grodd’s command and open fire. Dick saves Mick and then the two of them light up the soldiers.

At Grodd’s camp, Amaya learns what Grodd is planning to do. He wants to start World War III, teaching humanity a lesson. This starts by assassinating LBJ, who just landed in Vietnam. She pleads with the human part of him, saying that they will take him to a time before humanity. Grodd considers the offer, but doesn’t trust Amaya. She uses her totem, assuming the powers of a gorilla for him to see. Grodd is about to accept Amaya’s offer when Dick’s squad comes rolling into the camp, opening fire.

Zari manages to unblock the signal jammer and they get word to Jax and Stein that LBJ is Grodd’s target and the gorilla is headed their way to steal the time ship. Stein tells Jax that they’ll go save the president, but Jax insists on going alone. He’ll be alone soon enough and needs to prove to himself that he can do it without Stein. This leaves Stein to fly the Waverider and deal with Grodd. The gorilla uses his mind control on Sara, who attacks Stein. But Stein brought some scientists on board to help with the Firestorm problem, and she is knocked out by Sir Isaac Newton. Grodd suddenly disappears.

Jax intercepts the president’s convoy, warning of the trap that has been set. LBJ accidentally triggers a land mine, but as long as he stays still, it won’t go off. Jax does some quick thinking and freezes the mechanism so that he and the president can get away. He then leads LBJ back through the field and to safety.

At the camp, Dick rounds up all of the Vietnamese people, and the Legends, save Mick, telling them that their actions have led them to this moment. He is about to open fire when Mick steps in his way. Mick tells his father that he can’t kill these people. If he does, he will be haunted by their screams. It will destroy his life. Dick stands down.

Back on the Waverider, everything has been taken care of and Jax’s bravery led LBJ to give him the secret recipe of his wife’s pie. The Legends, and Newton, are chowing down when Sara appears, fully healed. Well, except for the giant knot on her head where Newton hit her with a frying pan.

In present day, Grodd falls out of the sky where he is met by Damien Darhk. Damien asks Grodd to join his crew, and says that he doesn’t need a time machine. He presents Grodd with the black stone they’ve been using for time travel. Lovely.

This was a great episode and it was awesome to finally get a Mick-centric episode. We don’t know much about his past besides the fact that he killed his parents. Dick had an interesting set-up because he was actually acting pretty nobly up until he was going to murder a bunch of innocent people for no reason. Mick actually started to feel a connection to his father, which is why he went along with his decisions. His speech about what would happen if he did kill them was well done. Dominic Purcell and Evan Jones did a fantastic job.

An interesting point was brought up during this episode. It is odd that some of these anachronisms are leading the Legends to people they know. We met Sir Stein, young Ray, and now Mick’s dad. This can’t just be a coincidence. I’m really interested to see where this thread goes, and wonder who else from the Legends’ lives we might meet.

Next week, the main story takes a break next week for the ‘Crisis on Earth-X’ crossover in the episode entitled, ‘Crisis on Earth-X, Part 4.’
